Yes!  A woman I am, but not your average woman!  I love the outdoors, breaking a sweat, and most importantly sports!!  Honestly, in my opinion bartending is very similar to playing sports. I do a lot of bending, stretching, running (from one end of the bar to the other), and even lifting!  Now I know what you're thinking...but seriously a full bottle of liquor can be pretty heavy sometimes.  I must admit as active as I am in my everyday life, I sometimes wake up a little stiff and sore after a busy night of working behind the bar, as if I had played a game of football the night before.

Speaking of football, tis’ the season for tailgating, hanging out at the sports bars, and rooting for your team! I love working in a sports bar during football season! There is nothing more entertaining than having your bar filled with fans from opposing teams!  It’s always fun to guess who will order what, and who will end up drinking more (the fans whose teams are loosing, or the fans whose teams are winning).

I always sell a lot of beer during football season obviously, but one day I was thrown for a loop. A group of guys came into the bar and ordered a round of Bloody Mary’s as their drink of choice while watching a game. Now I am no stranger to fixing a mean Bloody Mary but usually the requests come from my older clientele. This totally tweaked my interest, and made me want to really probe them for information, to learn more about them. Come to find out the cocktail was originally made by a European bartender especially for a patron who was visiting Paris and stopped by to have a drink at a local bar. The bartender did not have a name for the drink he created and the patron (being from Chicago) said it reminded him of the “Bucket of Blood Club” back home, and a girl named Mary who worked there. Makes sense right…”Blood Mary".  I guess you do learn something everyday!

Being a Bartender, I pride myself on my knowledge of beverages and was extremely pleased with my Bloody Mary history lesson. However, one of my regulars wasn't at all, and he made it known. Being from New York he excitedly exclaimed that the “New Yorkers” really made the “Bloody Mary” what it is today, by adding Tabasco Sauce, Worcestershire Sauce, and Cayenne Pepper to the original tomato juice, and vodka recipe! It only took a few drinks to turn into more than just a “Battle of the Perfect Bloody Mary,” but into a Patriots vs. Colts “discussion” for lack of better words!  Me, being a die hard “Philadelphia Eagles” fan made sure to stay out of it! It seemed like the more heated the debate got the spicier the guys wanted their Bloody Mary’s. I have to say I was very entertained!

When it was all said and done, all of the men got lost watching the game and I was asked to make another round of Bloody Mary’s.  However, this time with special instructions…make it into a shot and substitute the tomato juice with beer (all other ingredients stayed the same). Now this baffled me, but after what I had just been through, I didn’t even bother to ask!
